Local Search Citations – Start Building

Citations are mentions of your business name and address on directory sites such as CitySearch, Yelp, Yellowpages.com, Localeze and many more. References to your business such as the Chamber of Commerce, your local Patch and other organizations you are listed on are also considered a citation. Citations are a major ranking factor with Google and other search engines. The more sites your business is listed on, the more credible your business is to Google. If you want your business to rank higher in the local search results, you need to build your citations. It is important that the information is correct and consistent everywhere you are listed.  Here’s how to get started.

Google Places New Look

Google Places is in constant change – what else is new! They continually test new ways to provide specific information about a place in the SERPs (search engine results pages).  This past week all the buzz is Google Places new look. Blog posts from the experts on local search include Mike Blumenthal, Optilocal, Phil Rozek, and many others giving us a better understanding of what’s going on. After performing local searches in Chrome and Internet Explorer, here’s a snapshot of what I’ve been seeing:

A new look in the SERPs

  • The infamous red pins are now grey. If you hover your mouse over the grey pins they turn red.
  • The map is vertically larger with more pin locations displayed – some little red dots.
  • A new panel to the right displays with much more information when you click on the right arrow – Place page photos with more details and

Home is a Destination, Not a Title Tag

Title tags on your local business website are very important.  They tell the search engines and people searching for your product/service whether or not you are worth their time.

3 Things a Title Tag Is

1. It’s that text you see at the top of your internet browser bar.  The title tag defines the title of a website page.

2. It’s also the link text that shows up in search engine results.

3.  The title tag is a major (not the only!) factor used by Google to identify the content of your site and whether your site is worth listing in results when someone is searching for what your business is, does and/or provides.  In other words, it is a big component of search engine optimization of your website.

And, What A Title Tag Is Not

It’s All About Location: Using Microdata On Your Website To Get Your Business Found

A local business owner knows that location is important.  People need to know where you are in order to find you.  The same goes for Google, Bing and Yahoo.  Back in June these three big search engines came together and decided to use microdata formats to better understand data on websites (Search Engines Come Together For A Richer Web).  This data includes business name, address and phone number, or NAP in SEO terms.  Having that NAP in a format that will help you get found easier by the major search engines will give you an advantage over your competition.

Get Your NAP Right

For a local business it is important to have your NAP on every page, don’t make people look for it.  Also, your NAP needs to be text, not an image.  Many businesses will have a banner made for their website with their logo and NAP … Continue Reading

ReviewBiz Makes Asking For Local Business Reviews Easy

Local business reviews are becoming more and more important since consumers are using Google and other review sites to select businesses before visiting the physical location. Susan recently wrote a great post, Hey Local Businesses: Ask for a Review!  where she mentions a few ways for local businesses to ask for reviews, one way is adding a link or button for people to leave a review on your website.   We are currently working on a WordPress website for a hair salon and looking at the various ways to ask for reviews by linking to popular business review sites.  In this post I want to introduce you to a great online tool that is free to use and will help you create a button for your website to ask for reviews on Google Places, Yelp, Citysearch and more.

Hey Local Businesses – Ask For A Review!

A couple of weeks ago Google updated Google Places. One major change is that Google Places no longer includes reviews from third party sites such as Yelp, Yahoo and CitySearch.  Online reviews are an important factor as to how you will rank in Google Places and also helps potential customers decide whether or not they should checkout your business.

Businesses have come to realize the importance of online reviews and how they relate to their bottom line. Many of our clients ask us how they can get more customers to write reviews about their business.  Our advice is “ask for a review.” They look at us and say sure, we will do that. Well, sometimes they don’t because they are either too busy or don’t know where to start and how to ask for a review.  We came up with some ideas for our clients that we would like to … Continue Reading

WordCamp Boston 2011

It was little over a week ago that Ellen and I and 600 other people attended WordCamp Boston 2011. This was our first WordCamp and we were so excited to be there. We were never disappointed, it was the most well organized conference I had ever been to – all logistics and details were taken care prior to and during the conference.  Registration on the web was easy – you could see who was attending, add your picture and make a comment. We were greeted by upbeat organizers helpful in answering any questions.  We were given a badge that included everything you needed to know about the conference – venue, schedule, Twitter hashtag, program and After Party info. You hung the badge around your neck – all in one place – no big notebook to carry.

The Program

The WordCamp Program was excellent. There were a total of 40 presentations, … Continue Reading

How to Set-up a Coupon Offer in Google Places

Coupon offers are a great way to attract new and existing customers to your door. It is also a good way to move some merchandise without the expense of an ad campaign. With the weak economy we all rely on coupons to help with our purchases and services. I don’t leave the house without my coupons. I search the internet for the best deals, print out my finds and bring my iPhone along for mobile offers. Did you know that you can create a coupon offer for potential customers who visit your Google Places page?  Google Places allows you to create a coupon offer for a special discount or deal. This offer is not to be confused with the new “Google Offers” that Google is promoting in limited locations. It is the coupon offer that all Google Places users can take advantage of now.

What is needed to create the offer
